The Opioid Crisis

We are experiencing the worst substance use epidemic in every corner of America, from urban cities to suburban towns to rural villages and mountains.  The opioid crisis is a multi-layered problem that has come in three distinct waves spanning over more than 3 decades.  There has been nearly 1 million lives lost in that timeframe and over the last couple of years has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.  Increasing awareness and a wide variety of innovative initiatives are the best way to continue to combat this epidemic.

This presentation provides a framework for understanding the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace. It builds on shared language to include additional terms such as cisgender/transgender, REaL, SOGI, etc.. It also provides useful tools and tactics to promote positive interactions and mitigate conscious and unconscious bias. Scenario discussions are used to explore personal triggers, understand interactions and reactions, and provide constructive ways to intervene, leading to a more welcoming culture and productive team.
